Electracy has significantly impacted our society, shaping who we are both socially and individually. It has altered our perspectives on countless topics and even shifted our opinions based on the persuasiveness of its sources. However, the most astonishing effect of electracy on individuals is the paradoxical feeling of being alone, unique, or special despite being digitally connected to billions of people. This vast network of ideas and unlimited content can create a profound sense of insignificance. To illustrate this, I chose the Loki series as an analogy.

Before the series, Marvel portrayed Loki as an egocentric character who believed he was destined for greatness and would stop at nothing to achieve it. Despite his ambitions, he repeatedly failed, ultimately meeting his demise at the hands of Thanos. However, during the Avengers’ time-traveling escapades in Endgame, Loki became a variant when he stole an Infinity Stone. As a variant, he was captured by the TVA (Time Variance Authority). While investigating this mysterious agency, Loki viewed his original timeline and saw that his destiny was to die at Thanos’ hands.

Electracy can define people and even shape their fate. But how? This happens through interactions on social media, the social status derived from what one consumes, and comparisons to similar experiences others share online. Relying too heavily on electracy can doom individuals to a destiny dictated by algorithms, social standards, and media narratives. At that point, electracy doesn’t just connect us—it predicts and controls our lives.

Despite this, it’s possible to break free from electracy’s influence. In Loki, the titular character refuses to accept his predetermined destiny, even after seeing it unfold. Instead, he strives for a better future, ultimately becoming one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, controlling all timelines. Like Loki, we too can write our destinies rather than surrendering to the predictions of electracy. Personally, I strive not to depend on electracy entirely, using its lessons to improve myself while resisting trends and societal pressures.

One way to gain independence from electracy is through faith in Christ. God grants us the blessing of free will, enabling us to rely on ourselves rather than external influences. There is a space within electracy for Christianity, where tools can be used to deepen one’s faith without succumbing to the system. This freedom allows us to live authentically and embrace our true identities. While depending on electracy is easy, choosing to live by our own will—granted to us by God—requires effort but ultimately leads to a more fulfilling life.
